J.C. Lamster Departs for Dutch East Indies to Film for the Koloniaal Instituut

On 29 January 1912, a short notice in the Dutch newspapers reported that the captain of the infantry of the East Indies Army, J.C. Lamster, had left for Paris to learn to make films at Pathé Frères.

Lamster had been commissioned for this project by the Koloniaal Instituut (‘Colonial Institute’). After his ‘training’, Lamster departed for the Dutch East Indies, where he would make short films for the Koloniaal Instituut. In total, he would make around 60 films that would be shown in the Netherlands during lectures that were given under the auspices of the Koloniaal Instituut.
Towards the end of the 1910s, the films were also released for public screenings.
