Filmfabriek Hollandia werd in 1914 in Haarlem opgericht als opvolger van de Maatschappij voor Wetenschappelijke Cinematographie en de Maatschappij voor Artistieke Cinematographie.
Directeur van Hollandia was Julius Stoop en tot gedelegeerd commissaris werd Maurits H. Binger benoemd. De maatschappij had een filmatelier aan de Antoniestraat in Haarlem.
Tussen 1914 en 1919 produceerde Filmfabriek Hollandia een groot aantal lange fictiefilms. De maatschappij maakte gebruik van een vaste groep acteurs en actrices, waaronder Annie Bos en Adelqui Migliar. De regie was meestal in handen van Louis Chrispijn sr. en Maurits Binger.
Na deze relatief succesvolle periode kreeg Hollandia vanaf 1919 te maken met toenemende concurrentie van de buitenlandse film. Om een internationale doorbraak te forceren ging Hollandia een samenwerking aan met de Britse firma Smith's Film Sales. Dit samenwerkingsverband, Anglo-Hollandia-film, produceerde een aantal speelfilms die echter weinig succesvol bleken. Met de Britse distributeur A.G. Granger produceerde Binger vervolgens veertien lange speelfilms onder de naam Granger-Binger-film.
Ondanks alle pogingen was een faillissement niet af te wenden: op 14 augustus 1923 werd Filmfabriek Hollandia failliet verklaard. Uiteindelijk werd de maatschappij in 1928 opgeheven.
De afdeling voor wetenschappelijke film had Hollandia in 1919 al afgestoten. Op 1 december 1919 nam Julius Stoop, mede-directeur en leider van deze afdeling, eervol ontslag. De afdeling werd omgevormd tot de zelfstandige Ned. Mij. voor Cinematografie Filmfabriek Polygoon, zoals de filmfabriek zich officieel noemde.
